Skelton Asks USDA to Review GIPSA Rule on Livestock Marketing

Press Release

Date: Oct. 5, 2010
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ike Skelton (D-Mo.) has joined 115 Members of Congress in urging U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to order a complete economic review of the Department's proposed regulations on the marketing of farm livestock. The regulations, which were written by the Grain Inspection, Packers, and Stockyards Administration, or GIPSA, have caused a great deal of concern among Missouri's agricultural community. In requesting the economic review, Skelton said:

"The Department of Agriculture should immediately conduct an economic study on its proposed GIPSA regulations. Farmers in Missouri have expressed concern to me about the potential costs of these regulations. Show-Me State producers, and indeed all American farmers, must be given the ability to fully evaluate how GIPSA's proposal will impact the cost of doing business."

The proposed rule, published in the Federal Register by GIPSA on June 22, 2010, would precipitate major changes in the regulation of livestock and poultry marketing.
